Mr Duval also said that another long-term plan is to hire highly trained paramedics who can assist with the development of a local Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) programme.

“When hiring a contracted officer we will look at them as having a broad range of skills, hopefully instructor level skills where they can lend to the training programme,” he said.

“We’re not just carrying people in to work clinically but we want them to be multi-faceted where they can help and contribute their skills to the Island in developing our EMT programme.”

The four to six months’ training programme will make the Cayman Islands self-sufficient in the area of EMT instead of the heavy reliance on the US courses, according to the head of the organisation.

Another aspect of the local training would be dive medicine, which would assist in emergencies in the dive sector, he said.

He said the courses would get participants to certification levels approved by the local medical council.

“The goal is to be able to certify these individuals locally with the council because we want to be self-sufficient,” he said.

“We want to be able to have a dynamic system where individuals can come in on a technical type programme, be trained locally and grow in the programme.”

With five officers short due to the recent resignation of some expatriate paramedics and EMTs, Mr Duval said the EMS is looking for employees interested in the field of pre-hospital medicine.
